Glen Allen Backyard Family Photos

It’s weird to mark the progress of a pandemic with a person’s life. But it’s also hard not to; the last time I visited this family in Glen Allen was March 12, 2020, when this toddler was approximately two weeks old and when wearing a mask was still considered “unnecessary” for the healthy (insert eye roll).

The next day was Friday the 13th, panic set in over the weekend, toilet paper shortage… you know this story. It simultaneously feels like yesterday and a million years ago.

But now here we are 15 months later, hanging out with the sweetest 15 month old and his parents in the backyard. Watching him approach everything new in the yard with suspicious curiosity, and then joy as he discovers something fun, is like so many of us coming out of COVID fog. Suspicious curiosity, and then rediscovery of simple joys like playing with family, ladybugs, and sticks.

Spending a summer afternoon in a shady yard with a delightful family is pretty much my version of a dream job. No planned activities, just exploring, walking, a bit of running, and lots and lots of laughter. And gorgeous soft light.

He didn’t take too long to warm up to me, but I loved how much he defaulted to wanting to be held by his parents. Toddlers only count on you to be their safe place for so long, before they start developing their independence and wanting to venture out alone. I love capturing this moment in time.

Thank you all for allowing me to come to your beautiful home and play in your yard with you for the afternoon! I had such a lovely time and it was clear that this was a comfortable place for all of you to play together. I’m so thrilled to be able to see you all again!
