Winter Family Photos at Deep Run Park
Deep Run Park is a great location for family photos. Or maternity photos, for that matter. It’s a big, sprawling park in the far west end (aka Henrico) with a variety of options for backgrounds. It changes well with the seasons, offering lots of green in summer, lots of color in fall, and then lots of neutrals in winter. And that’s when this session happened - in winter. Nicole and her family met me in early January for their family session, and the browns and grays of winter really gave their session an earthy, modern feel. They dressed in wintery neutrals and we really went for the warm earthy vibe.
I love how the light changes in Deep Run throughout the year, too. It’s strong and direct (and so very hot) at the peak of summer. Then as the seasons change and RVA turns away from the sun, the light gets weaker and less direct, and is easier to play with. Plus, the sun sets at like 5pm in January, so you can do a family session and then run off for a nice dinner with your family. Or run off for pizza and ice cream with your family. I’m no judge.
While I get all my best energy from working with 3 year olds, I love being able to take a breather every once in a while and work with teenagers and adults. They’re usually much more reserved and self-conscious, but they also take direction far better than the average three-year-old. (Looking at you, Mira.) Instead of trying to approach every family session the exact same way (and making teens feel odd as I ask them if they like swings and slides), I utilize my questionnaire and shape the session around my clients. I embrace the self-consciousness and tell them where to look and what to do, to take the pressure off and let them follow me, instead of letting them lead the session (like I typically do with toddlers).
Oh, and don’t forget to prioritize a couple’s photo, while we’re together.
Deep Run lends itself well to both kinds of session, but I especially love being able to tell families to stand or sit in particular places so we can utilize the natural props in the park. Here, sit on this log. Here, stand in front of this ultra modern looking bathroom wall. Step one foot over to the left. Perfect. The light is perfect. *Click* You’re doing a great job!
Thank you, Nicole and family, for joining me on a beautiful (albeit chilly) January late afternoon, and choosing me for your family photos!
Another spot in Richmond that’s I think is perfect for all seasons is Forest Hill Park (also great for both family and maternity photos). It has water features just like Deep Run, but it also has lots of stone, which is perfect at any time of year. Plus, it’s much more centrally located, for south-of-the-James clients. And you can’t really beat the maples that turn Forest Hill fiery in autumn. But that’s another blog. (No seriously, go click to read that other blog.)
