Summertime VMFA Family Photos

Mother holds her infant son up over her head. Their cheeks are touching and they're both looking at the camera. It's a hot summer day in RVA.

It was a hot, steamy July evening when I met Priyanka and her family outside the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Her parents had been visiting from India for several months, providing some help after Priyanka’s son was born, but their visit was ending and the family wanted to document their time together before they went home with some family photos.

We played in the hot stickiness that is Richmond in July, seeking refuge in the shadows of giant oaks and the building itself from the evening sun. We found relief from the humidity in the grass and around the water feature on top of the hill, and pretended it was a much cooler day than it was.

Priyanka brought a handful of outfits for her son to wear during our session, because she wanted to remember him in all of her favorite outfits. I loved that she chose to do that, and he didn’t mind fresh clothes every few minutes as a way to cool off.

Thank you so much for choosing me for your family photos, Priyanka! I’m so glad your parents could join us (I love getting extended family members into sessions) and wish them safe travels back home.
