Mini Sessions That are Actually Convenient

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog explaining the differences between mini sessions and regular-length (“regs”) photo sessions. You can read that here if you missed it. It’s helpful, I think, in explaining how an hour-long session lets us do more together, get more relaxed photos of your family, and document your real life in a way that mini sessions just can’t.

Without rehashing the whole post (seriously, you can read it if you haven’t), I talked about location and how mini sessions are at a set place, at a set time, with no wiggle room for your family, because that’s kind of the point of them. It’s like an outdoor studio, where you make an appointment, come in, take a few photos, and go on your merry way.

I also talked about an exception to that location rule, which are the mini Porchraits I do each year. I started doing these last year around the holidays, and I did them again this spring (Motherhood Porchraits), and I’m back again with Holiday Porchraits for Thanksgiving 2023.

Holiday Porchraits are 15 minute mini sessions, but instead of you packing up your kids and driving to a spot I select, I’m packing up my gear and coming to you, on Thanksgiving weekend. I choose Thanksgiving weekend each year because families traditionally get together this weekend and take “proof of life” group photos.

Holiday Porchraits are a step above the “proof of life” photos that we tend to take at family gatherings, where one designated person (raises hand) brings a tripod and sets a timer and runs back and forth between the tripod and the group a half-dozen times to get a photo that looks somewhat sweet.

…the 15-minute holiday session was a dream! All of the family enjoyed it so much, and loved how it just fit so easily into the day, and wasn’t a big “to do” - and the photos were fantastic!

Somehow, everyone acts just a little bit better when an outsider shows up. Uncles make fewer (or quieter) fart jokes. Kids snuggle into you a little more. Skirts get smoothed just a little bit more. And everybody takes it just a little bit more seriously than if Mom says go outside for a picture, and then spends 15 minutes running back and forth.

As someone who has done both the running back and forth and the professional taking of photos for other families, I can attest that one is much easier than the other.

Let’s make this Thanksgiving a little bit easier for you, too. Knock out the holiday photo, get some photos that show how much you love these people you hardly ever see, stay home for it, worry less about the process, and get it all done in 15 minutes.

This year’s Holiday Porchraits are being held on Friday, November 24, and Saturday, November 25. I have two slots on Friday morning, two slots Friday afternoon, and two slots Saturday morning (Saturday afternoon is reserved for football with my own family, thanks).

This year the sessions are 15 minutes, include 10 digital images that you can print anywhere you like (including my store if you’re so inclined to get it all done in one place), and will be ready and delivered in 5 days because I like symmetry and round numbers.
