Five Excellent RVA Spring Photo Locations
Fall is by far the most popular time for people to call me about family photos. Whenever the first leaves start to change, it’s like a switch goes off and people remember that they haven’t done family photos yet.
I’m not sure why spring is so largely ignored; there are some really gorgeous backdrops in Richmond when the trees start blooming (as they have) and the weather starts warming up (has it has). I have some favorite spots around town to photograph families - some classic spots, some more creative spots. This would be a perfect time to get on my calendar, to avoid the fall rush, dress in some spring tones, and play amongst some flowers and trees. Allergies be damned.
VMFA
I love the mix of conventional flowers and unconventional hardscapes that the VMFA yard provides. Delicate azaleas and stark concrete walls with harsh shadows. It fills my creative heart with joy. Throw in cactus and a geometric metal wall and it’s * chef’s kiss. *
Harry G Daniel Park
This one is located in Chesterfield, near my neck of the woods. If you like green, a park with lots of trees just after they flower would be perfect. Choose an outfit that pops against the bright green (like blue, for example) and you’ll look great.
University of Richmond
Classic gardens abound at UR’s campus, with hydrangeas taller than me, dogwoods in bloom, and lots of flowery plants and bushes. I like how the flowers offset with the brick and gothic archways.
Bryan Park
Azaleas, amiright? The azaleas bloom here in a pretty swift two-week period, but when they go, they go hard. White, pink, and red blooms are everywhere in this little haven and it's a beautiful spot for spring photos, if you go at the right time. (As in, April.)
Your Yard
Lastly, don't forget about the possibilities in your own backyard. Your back (or front) yard can be magical for your kids when they have your full attention. Pull the outside chairs out of winter storage, find a picnic blanket and take a ball or just take yourselves, and explore your own back yard.
